| *Pats back*
It has been AGESSSS since I have last posted a blog! Thought that these 2 important events warranted a blog, so everyone can either praise me (if you want) or to learn from my experience. First, about my graduate studies. I have completed my first semester of my Masters of Science degree in accounting at University of Maryland with 2 As and one B. Being a full time working professional along with taking 3 classes have been exhausting. I work from 9-5 Mondays to Fridays and take classes on Saturdays from 8-5ish. Balancing between those and doing homework is not quiet easy, but I MADE it! Only 3 more semesters to go!
Second, an interesting thing occurred today. Since I was in classes from 8AM and it was 2PM (there was two 10 minutes and lunch breaks between), I was feeling really tired and decided to leave the classroom for a short walk outside to refreshen myself. Little did I know what was going on in the classroom until one of my interpreters, Bren, told me. He said that when I left the classroom, the other interpreter had stopped interpreting and the professor said "Oh, I didn't know that Jessica has left the classroom." A few minutes later, he let the class go for a 10 minutes break and walked up to my interpreters and said "Jessica seems to be lost and have not returned to the classroom." I asked Bren whether if the professor said it in front of the class or privately to him and the other interpreter. He said that the first one was in front of the class and the other one privately. I felt humiliated and told Bren that I felt singled out and that the professor was keeping tabs on me just because I am Deaf. *GROWLS* I decided to have a chat with the professor after class. As I came up to the professor, I expressed my concern that I was being singled out in front of the class and that he was talking to the interpreters about me, when their role was merely to interpret for me and anyone else around me. He bowed out and apologized for singling me out and assured that it would not happen again. Within the hour, I got an email from him apologizing further and stating that it was not his intention to single me out. That really took guts to do this and I have increased my respect for him. I think I shall have another chat with him? hmmm....
*NOTE: statements may not be accurate, but it was the general concept.
